Physical Education at Tower House School
Tower House School provides a framework for success in a variety of physical activities. Children are introduced to a wide range of sports including swimming and skiing and have the opportunity to play in teams where a team spirit of sportsmanship and courtesy is fostered.
The School site has a recently refurbished gymnasium and two all-weather tennis courts which were relaid in 2009. Extensive use is made by the school of Torbay Leisure Centre with all its facilities as a major public sports centre. For example, this allows juniors to swim every week throughout their time in school, squash to be played and use of a floodlit astro turf full size soccer pitch.
There are strong links to many local schools including Paignton Sports College and Churston Grammar School. Soccer, hockey, rugby, netball, basketball and gymnastics form the core of taught sports. Co-educational clubs, which enhance social skills include trampolining, soccer, dance, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, skiing, basketball and table tennis, tae-kwondo and boxercise. Results against local schools are incredible considering the relative size of Tower House. The U16 Basketball Team for example have finished runners-up in the South Devon League. The school's reputation for sport locally is very high, the department being led by Mr Lloyd Blackler, recently voted Torbay's Sports Personality of the Year.
Examinations can be taken at GCSE Level (AQA 4890) with pupils having the opportunity to be entered for the double award where appropriate. Great emphasis is laid on achieving excellence in all areas of the specification - namely as official, organiser, coach and of course performer. All students are given a gym induction and are entered for Bronze medallion training in life support and life-saving. What pupils say about sport at Tower House:
